Carroll falls to third-seeded Millikin in third round of CCIW Tournament

Pios scheduled to meet top-seeded North Central in tourney semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m.

CAROL STREAM, Ill. - The fourth-seeded Carroll University baseball team lost to third-seeded Millikin University 4-0 in a CCIW Tournament third-round game at Wheaton College's Lee Pfund Stadium on Friday afternoon.
It was the first loss of the double-elimination tournament for Carroll, which entered the contest riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak (including a victory in the regular-season finale and back-to-back tournament wins) but dropped to 22-21 overall.
The Pioneers, 2-1 in the tournament, are scheduled to face top-seeded North Central College in a fourth-round semifinal matchup at Lee Pfund Stadium on Saturday at 11 a.m.
North Central outlasted second-seeded Augustana 5-4 in another third-round matchup Friday.
Millikin, 3-0 in the tournament and 30-13 overall, will take on the Carroll/North Central winner at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Big Blue collected their first two runs in the bottom of the first inning on solo home runs to left field by Gabe Soria and Brent Beals.
Millikin's final runs came as Garrett Fritz delivered an RBI single to left field in the second and Andrew Auton added a run-scoring groundout in the fourth.
Carroll, which generated five hits in the contest, had a golden opportunity to rally in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs but it was short lived as the result of a frustrating inning-ending flyout.
TJ Pfaffle, a CCIW first-team all-conference selection, went 2-for-4 in leading the Carroll hitting attack. Dylan Callahan, a CCIW first-team all-conference selection and the program's reigning career leader in home runs, had a double with Brad Vosters and Nick Angus each adding a single.
Beals went 2-for-3 and was also the winning pitcher for Millikin, throwing a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk through seven complete innings.
Brett Buzzelli took the complete-game loss for Carroll, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk through eight innings.
