WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team was swept by third-place Millikin University in a sunny, cool College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Frame Park on Wednesday afternoon, falling in the opener 6-1 and 12-8 in the finale.
Carroll, which dropped to 12-16 in conference and 18-18 overall to remain at .500, is currently in sole possession of fifth place in the league standings.
TJ Pfaffle, the team's leading hitter this season with a .400 batting average, finished with a team-high four RBIs to lead the Pioneers.
GAME 1
Trevor Benz went 2-for-3 and drove in the lone run on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for Carroll, which managed just four hits.
Mitchell Massino contributed a double and scored a run for the Pioneers, who committed two errors in the contest.
Drew McDermid took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk though 5 1/3 innings.
Brent Beals was the winning pitcher, yielding one run on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks to earn a complete-game victory for Millikin.
Bryan Frank went 2-for-4 with two home runs, including a three-run blast in the decisive top of the first, and five RBIs to power an 11-hit attack for the Big Blue.
GAME 2
Pfaffle went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to fuel an 11-hit offensive attack for the Pioneers in the finale.
Brad Vosters contributed two hits with two runs scored and drove in a run for Carroll, which finished with three doubles but stranded nine runners on base.
Nick Angus had two hits with a double, a run scored and drove in a run.
Benz and
Benton Holly each added two hits and scored a run for the Pioneers.
Millikin, which entered the day in sole possession of third place in the CCIW standings and hovering just outside of the d3baseball.com Top 25, scored a single run in the top of the fourth and followed with four runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.
Carroll answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as
Justin Baker and Vosters each scored as the result of an error.
Millikin scored two runs in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-2.
Carroll answered with two runs in the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly out to left field by Angus and an RBI single to left field by Vosters.
Millikin, which pounded out 17 hits, added three runs in what became a decisive top of the eighth, including a two-run single to center field by Garrett Fritz.
Carroll put together a four-run rally in the eighth to trim the deficit to 10-8, highlighted by an RBI sacrifice flyout by
Danny Glampe and a three-run double by Pfaffle but couldn't get any closer.
Scotty Starovich took the loss and dropped to 4-2 overall, allowing five runs on nine hits with one strikeout and three walks through 4 2/3 innings.
The Pioneers utilized five other pitchers in the showdown, including
Michael Costanzo,
Josh Nitch,
Josh Streu,
Dawson Kiphart and
Jake Nitch who combined to yield seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks the rest of the way.
Jared Buzan pitched a three-hit shutout in working the opening four innings for Millikin, which improved to 15-10 in conference and 22-11 overall as it swept the regular-season series.
