KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's track and field team finished in second place with 87 points at the Carthage College Firebird Opener held in Kenosha on Saturday.
Kevin Lind and
Steven Hermsen both came away with first-place finishes, while Hermsen reset the men's shot put school record with a new personal best throw.
In track events, Lind scampered to a first-place finish in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.54 seconds. Not far behind were Carroll teammates
Sheldon Achs (3
rd),
Troy Burkert (7
th), and
Patrick Send (8
th) who all added points to the Carroll team score. Achs also picked up an eighth-place finish and a point for the Pioneers in the 200-meter.
Nathan Raatz's second-place finish in the 800 meter run scored eight points for Carroll, while
Kyle Adams and Charlie Quast finished third and seventh, respectfully, in the 3,000-meter race.
Peter Marra was edged out in the 55-meter hurdles and finished with a second place. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Raatz, Marra, Burkert, and Adams finished second in the event.
In field events, Hermsen's record breaking throw was seven centimeters farther than his last school record, and he beat it on his fifth throw of the afternoon.
Max Campbell also finished inside the top eight to earn points for the team. Hermsen was beat out in the weight throw event and settled for second place just in front of Jimmy Hinkley who finished third.
David Burgess was just two inches from tying for a first place finish but could not overcome the 1.97 meter jump and finished second in the men's high jump.
Carroll will continue to compete next weekend at the Red Hawk Opener at Ripon college on Saturday, January 22.
