Peyton Frost contributed an individual season-high 16 kills as the Carroll University women's volleyball team defeated Wheaton College 25-27, 24-26, 26-24, 25-19, 17-15 in a thrilling, five-set College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin dual meet at Van Male Field House on Friday night.
It was the second conference dual victory for Carroll, which improved to 2-5 in the league standings and 10-12 overall.
The Pioneers have recorded five, five-set victories (also including wins over Lake Forest, Buena Vista, Hamline and Luther).
Katie Jensen finished with 13 kills and two blocks for Carroll, which generated 79 points, 59 kills, 75 digs, 14 service aces, six blocks and 57 assists.Â
Jensen, a 5-foot-8 junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, leads the team with 179 kills. Frost, a 5-10 sophomore from Saint John, Indiana, is currently second on the team with 142 kills to complete a high-octane 1-2 punch for the Pioneers.
Kaitlin Gawelski followed with 11 kills and two blocks versus Wheaton, which dropped to 2-4 in conference and 9-11 overall.
Despite coming up short in extended-point first and second sets, the Pioneers showcased their resilience, heart and determination by answering with three statement-making victories to complete an inspirational home-court comeback.
Carroll demonstrated its progression by combining for 39 kills with 14 errors over the course of the final three sets (including 15 kills with seven errors and .222 hitting percentage in the momentum-shifting third-set victory, 16 kills with six errors and .278 percentage in the match-tying fourth set and eight kills with only one error with a .318 percentage in the decisive fifth set.)
Caitlin Laird had four aces and 16 digs,
Ashley Konecki collected three aces and four blocks,
Grace Perret had three aces and 14 digs,
Maggie McGough registered 15 digs and three assists and
Lindsey Diep had 21 assists.
Cora Riffle added 31 assists for the Pioneers, who improved to 4-4 overall on their home-court this season.
Tied 15-15 in the decisive fifth set, the Pioneers responded with a kill by
Rebekah Andreae to reclaim a lead and put an exclamation point on the comeback with a match-winning ace by Laird.
