EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team put pressure on Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Thursday night, but fell 1-2 over 90 minutes of play.
Sam Bahnfleth scored the Pioneers' goal in the first half.
The Pioneers (7-9) were outpaced on shots 7-26, but held Eau Claire to nine first half shots.
Jesper Johannassen recorded seven saves on nine shots on goal faced, allowing just the two goals. Bahnfleth led the Pioneers in shots with two.
The Blugolds held possession most of the contest, including in the first 30 minutes taking a majority of the shots. Bahnfleth broke away after a shot on goal by the Blugolds and scored unassisted in the 36
th minute of the first half. The Blugolds had one last look at goal but the attempt was blocked before the end of the period.
Eau Claire started the second half with a shot barrage leading to their first goal in the 55
th minute to equalize the game. With more shots hailing from the Blugolds, the Pioneers were able to record five attempts themselves, including a shot on goal attempt from
Adrian Komperda. Eau Claire was caught offsides in the 83
rd minute, but shortly after the free kick from Carroll, they rushed the net and scored again to take a 2-1. The half ended with 17 shots coming from Eau Claire in the second half to just five from Carroll.
The Pioneers will return to Schneider Stadium for the last time this regular season, in a crucial matchup with Augustana College on Saturday, October 22 at 3:30 PM.
