WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team earned a spot in the 2022 CCIW Men's Soccer Championship Tournament to start next weekend with a commanding 6-0 victory over Augustana on Saturday afternoon. This is the first time the Pioneers have ever qualified for the CCIW tournament.
Nico Hinten Llorens scored and assisted in the game.
The Pioneers (8-9, 3-4 CCIW) qualified after a loss by Illinois Wesleyan whom the Pioneers beat earlier this season. Carroll ripped off 24 shots against the Vikings, who tallied just four all game. Carroll's six goals are the most they've scored this season, and it is the second shutout recorded for the Pios in 2022. Carroll only needed two saves to get the win, one went to
Tyler Hanson while the other was a team save late in the second half. The Pioneers held possession for 56% of the 90 minutes and led 4-0 after the first half.
Hinten Llorens took the ball away from a defender in the eighth minute and sent a hard cross over to Gonzaga at the top of the box who scored with his left foot to take the 1-0 lead. Hinten Llorens scored himself almost ten minutes later, assisted by
Josh Venouziou. After a foul by Augustana in the box,
Ryan Coughlin continued his streak of penalty kick success to put Carroll up 3-0. With under five minutes remaining, a set-piece corner kick play tapped in by
Ethan Pequignot on a double assist from
Ethan Kratzer and
Kevin Ramirez gave Carroll a sizable first-half lead.
Marti Solanellas Vilella scored his seventh goal of the season unassisted with a rocket 35-yards out to the upper 90 of the goal in the 53
rd minute. The Pioneers spent most of the second half going to their bench to get minutes out of their deeper lineup.
Zach Bargas scored his first goal of the season, assisted by
Julius Marks in the 84
th minute to put a bow on the shutout victory.
Carroll has one more regular season contest scheduled against Nationally ranked North Park on Wednesday, October 26 in Chicago. The Pioneers will learn about their CCIW Tournament opponent as a result of the final day of games on Wednesday.
