WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team will move on to the semifinals of the 2022 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament after defeating the Augustana Vikings 1-0 in double overtime.
Simone Lippmann scored the game-winning goal in the 99
th minute.
The Pioneers (11-3-5) held the advantage most of the contest despite some scares from Augustana. Carroll held a 13-8 lead on shots over the Vikings, with
Elizabeth Weinberg and Lippmann taking three each.
Caitlin Fitzsimons added another clean sheet to her record this season with a shoutout and three saves. Carroll took five corner kicks in the match and held possession of the ball for 54% of the game.
In a quick but grueling first half, Fitzsimons tallied two saves while the Pios took two chances at goal.
Grace Tumilty had the first look five minutes into the game. Carroll finished the half with two shots before the first buzzer rang. Carroll tallied eight total shots in the first half to set the tone. The Vikings made defensive adjustments in the second half, holding Carroll to three shots. Lippmann had a look that was inches over the crossbar. The Vikings had a wide-open goal with Fitzsimons on the ground but the shot rolled wide left.
In the first overtime, both teams fought back and forth, until Weinberg's deep cross from the far side found Lippmann right in front of the keeper as she tapped it past in the 99
th minute. During the second OT, Carroll declined to take a shot and only allowed one look from the Vikings in the final ten minutes.
The Pioneers will head to the number one-seeded Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 2 to take on the Titans in Bloomington. Carroll tied with IWU earlier this season.
