WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team played the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Wednesday night in a non-conference battle. The Pioneers fell 1-3 on the road.
Josh Gonzaga scored the lone Pioneer goal to go with five shots.
The Pioneers (6-6) kept it close with the Warhawks in regards to shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks. Whitewater had a two shot advantage and one additional corner kick. Carroll held the ball for 45% of the game, but the Warhawks had the ball inside Carroll's goalie box 51% of their possession time.
Jesper Johannassen took the loss with three goals allowed with two saves, one in each half.
Carroll struck first in the match, as Gonzaga's first shot of the game found the back of the net on an assist from
Zane Walters. The Warhawks rallied for two more shot attempts but missed off target after the goal. Whitewater got on the scoreboard in the 42
nd minute and 45
th minute just before the half.
Gonzaga and Walters started quickly for the Pioneers, taking three shots between the two of them within the first six minutes of the half. Whitewater scored for the third and final time in the 61
st minute to take the 3-1 lead.
Marti Solanellas Vilella, who finished with three shots, took his third shot of the night in the second half but missed the target wide right.
Carroll jumps back into CCIW play on Saturday, October 8 at Illinois Wesleyan with the match beginning at 3:30 PM in Bloomington.
