WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University football team rounded out the 2022 regular season with a 6-4 overall record and 5-4 in CCIW games after a 7-37 loss to Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday.
Austin Eichstaedt hauled in the lone TD of the game in the first quarter with a five-catch, 50-yard performance.
Jonathan Rau led the team with 10 tackles on his senior day.
The Pioneers (6-4, 5-4 CCIW) generated just 182 yards of total offense and surrendered 416 to the Bears. Carroll went 4-12 on third down with three punts on a blustery afternoon. The Pois defense held Wash U to 2-10 on third down, but sacrificed 4-4 fourth down attempts.
Tyler McClain got his first career start and finished 16-30 with 113 yards, one score, and two interceptions. The Pioneers forced a turnover at the hands of
Damon Loker, who had two tackles for loss and seven tackles.
The Pioneers gave up 57 yards to the Bears on their first offensive possession but held firm on the three-yard line for three downs to force a 20-yard field goal. Rau broke up the third and goal pass from the three-yard line. After another stalled offensive drive, the Pios gave the ball back to the Bears who capitalized and scored a touchdown five plays later.
McClain and the Pioneers got on the board thanks partly to a penalty to keep the drive alive. McClain and Eichstaedt connected on a 4
th and tree for 19 yards and two plays later Eichstaedt caught the 17-yard touchdown pass over the middle.
After Wash U scored early in the second quarter to push their lead to 9, they regained possession a few minutes later.
Damon Loker ripped the ball away on a first-and-ten rush by the Bears and gave Carroll the ball back with 8:33 left in the first half. McClain was sacked on fourth down and turned the ball back over to the Bears who took a 23-7 lead into halftime.
Wash U's first offensive possession ate up 5:24 of the clock over 10 plays, which only left time for two Carroll offensive drives in the third quarter. Wash U's final score in the fourth quarter gave Carroll two more possessions with the football but McClain and freshman QB
Charlie King both threw interceptions on their drives.
All-Conference award selections will be announced this week by the CCIW.
