CHICAGO, Ill. – The Carroll University women's basketball team were unable to finish off their comeback after a tough second quarter, falling to the University of Chicago 61-70.
Kate Christian led the Pioneers with 11 points, three assists, and three steals, while
Allison Thompson added nine rebounds and a block.
The Pioneers (2-4) clawed their way back from being down 11 at halftime to just a three-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but the Maroons ran away with the game for the win. Carroll shot 32.8% from the floor and 23.1% from three, making just 6-26 shots from beyond the arc. The Pioneers forced 22 turnovers with 10 steals, leading to 21 points from turnovers, and 10 fast break points. The Carroll bench outscored the Chicago bench, 19-15, led in part by eight points from
Brooke Foster.
Carroll held a seven-point lead in the first quarter after opening the game on a 9-2 run that started with a three-pointer from
Emilie Wizner. Chicago held Carroll to just two more points in the second quarter and climbed back on their own 9-2 run to tie the game at the end of the first quarter. Chicago used that momentum from the first quarter by starting an 11-4 run in the first 2:39 seconds of the second quarter.
Lauren Soyke broke the Carroll scoreless streak with two made free throws at the 5:09 minute mark, but the Maroons had pushed their lead to 26-17.
Katie Evans and Christian tied to cut into the deficit with back-to-back three-pointers, but the Maroons stayed the course and finished the first half up 38-27. Chicago shot 11-12 from the floor and made 4-4 threes.
Chicago started the third quarter hot, pushing their lead up to 17 with a 6-0 run. Foster stopped the damage with a driving layup. The Pioneers outscored the Maroons by one in the third, cutting back the lead to down 10 after Wizner made two free throws to end the quarter. Foster's and-one, three-point play was able to put the Pioneers down five with 4:58 left in the game, and Wizner's fast-break layup cut the game down to three with 3:49 to go. The Maroons worked their lead back to nine thanks to free throw shooting and Carroll's untimely cold streak, as they finished 0-6 on shots from the floor the remainder of the game.
The Pioneers will be back on the road this Saturday after Thanksgiving and take on the Midwest Conference Champs of Ripon College on Saturday, November 26 at 1 PM.
