WUAKESHA, Wis. – In sub-freezing temperatures and single-digit wind-chills, the Carroll University women's lacrosse team outlasted Elmhurst University with an 11-2 win on Friday night. The Pioneers pick up their third straight in over the Bluejays thanks in part to six goals from
Katrina Hardin to go along with eight ground balls, while
Ariana Cullam earned five caused turnovers and three draw controls.
The Pioneers (4-1, 1-0 CCIW) didn't dominate the game like they have been against opponents. Carroll had a shot to goal percentage of under 40% for the first time this season. Despite a season-high 19 caused turnovers, Carroll turned it over 27 times as well, including 19 times in the first half. The Pioneers finished 20-26 on clear attempts, and
Alicia Van Dale recorded six saves and the win.
Carroll got on the board quickly in just 12 seconds on a
Lexi Kaltenberg goal from Hardin. Carroll looked like they would run away with this one, but only tallied two more goals in the first quarter. Kaltenberg scored unassisted with 6:42 left in the first quarter, and the Pioneers were blanked the remaining time on the clock. The Pios had five turnovers to finish out the quarter.
Clara Jelacic scored two quick goals in the second quarter to help get the momentum going, but the Pios failed to score any more going into halftime.
Due to weather conditions, a running clock was put in place for the second half. Freshman
Abby Stas scored her first career goal on a Hardin assist two minutes into the second half, but Elmhurst responded with their only two goals in the same quarter. Hardin was able to score twice in the third, including one with 1:04 remaining on the clock to take an 8-2 lead going into the fourth. Hardin recorded a hat trick in the fourth quarter, scoring after collecting the first draw, and added two more under two minutes to solidify the win.
The Pioneers will play in much warmer temperatures next week, as the program heads to Haines City, Florida for two spring-break trip games on Wednesday and Friday.
