Pioneers Pick up Victory in Florida Heat

HAINES CITY, Fla. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team overcame sweltering heat with a dominant 17-5 victory over SUNY Canton on Friday at Feltrim Sports Complex. Katrina Hardin led the team offensively with five goals and two assists. Ariana Cullam caused three turnovers and collected seven ground balls.

The Pioneers (5-2, 1-0 CCIW) gave up the first goal of the game, but then rallied back with 12 unanswered goals over the next 29 minutes. Carroll ripped off 34 shots with 26 on goal. Rebecca McDaniel faced 16 shots and saved six of them, including four in the first half. Carroll picked up 10 of their 24 ground balls in the second quarter and finished 17-25 on clears. The Pios had possession most of the game, winning 19 draw controls.

After back-and-forth empty possession for both squads, it was the Roos who got on the board first, with a man-down goal seven minutes into the first quarter. Clara Jelacic responded with an equalizing goal less than a minute later after Abby Stas won the ensuing draw control. Janu Patel gave Carroll the lead with 3:43 left in the first quarter, assisted by Hardin. Carroll came alive in the second period, scoring seven goals over 15 minutes. Hardin finished with two goals in the quarter, while Lexi Kaltenberg, Grace Brockman, Mina Zastrow, Stas, and Jelacic all scored one.

Stas came out hot in the second half, scoring and assisting on the 10th and 11th Carroll goals less than two minutes into the third quarter action. Canton scored two consecutive scores to turn off the running clock, but Brockman's goal assisted by Stas' free-position attempt put Carroll back up by 10. Carroll finished the game with four goals in the fourth quarter, started by a Brockman goal less than a minute into the period. Zoe Esveldt scored the two final goals for Carroll with under 10 minutes to play.

The Pioneers return to Midwest and will face Aurora University on the road on Saturday, March 26, in a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Women's Lacrosse 2nd Round Tournament game.
