Men’s Lacrosse Downed by Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team fell in a long road trip to Northland College on Saturday, March 19 in Ashland. Carroll finished the game with a 4-18 decision. Sam Kopshinsky and Zach Mehrtens finished with two points each, while Spencer Lautner grabbed four ground balls and caused five turnovers.
 
The Pioneers (0-3) recorded 30 shots with 20 on goal, but 16 saves from the Lumberjacks helped keep the Pioneers out of it. Cole Faust collected 16 saves of his own, including seven in the second period. The Pios went 15-18 on clear attempts, and a perfect 9-9 in the second half. Joe Harrison won 11 face-offs, with six in the first half as well.
 
The scoring didn't get started right away, but at the 8:47 minute mark, Northland started their scoring with a 4-0 run over the next three minutes. Mehrtens scored an unassisted goal with 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter, to cut the Northland lead to four goals going into the second quarter. Down 1-7, Carroll got an extra-man opportunity, but couldn't cash in. The Pios went into halftime down 1-9.
 
The Lumberjacks took a double-digit lead less than a minute into the third, but Kopshinsky responded with a goal a minute later. Mehrtens scored his second goal with under a minute to play, but just a few seconds after that, Northland picked up one more to make it a 3-15 ball game going into the fourth. Danny McGee cashed in on an extra-man opportunity for the Pioneers out of a timeout. The Pioneers had opportunities to cash in on a few more goals in the fourth but were thwarted in their attempts.
 
The Pios play their first game at home of the 2022 season on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 PM against Beloit College. The Pioneers last played Beloit back in 2020 in the first meeting of the programs.
