Carroll finishes 2-4 on productive six-game Florida road trip

Vosters establishes program record for career walks in 8-7 victory over Centre College

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Carroll University baseball team wrapped up its challenging six-game Spring Break road trip (competing in Studer's Blue Wahoos Challenge at Community Maritime Park's Admiral Fetterman Field) by defeating Centre College 8-7 in a nonconference game Sunday and falling to high-powered Birmingham-Southern College 12-1 in seven innings Monday.
The Pioneers finished the confidence-building Florida trip with a 2-4 record and are currently 6-9 overall.

GAME 1 (vs. Centre on Sunday)
Carroll defeated Centre College 8-7 in a nonconference game Sunday to earn its sixth victory of the early season.
Carroll trailed 6-4 after six innings but answered with four runs on two hits and capitalized on one error in what proved to be a decisive bottom of the seventh.
Justin Baker ignited the resilient rally on a run-scoring single to right field and later scored along with Benton Holly as the result of a costly throwing error.
Trevor Benz, who reached safely on a one-out walk and advanced to third on the error, scored the game-winner on a fielder's choice.
Baker went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Pioneers, who finished with seven hits in the battle. Mitchell Massino contributed a team-high three RBIs and Holly drove in two runs.
For the third consecutive game on the road trip, Carroll scored the first two runs of the game as Massino delivered with a two-run single to center field in the fourth.
Centre tied the game 2-2 in the fifth and took the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Carroll trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the sixth as Holly scored on an error and Clay Schult responded with an RBI sacrifice fly, setting the stage for the seventh-inning rally.
Centre scored its final run in the ninth but couldn't get any closer.
Carroll's Brad Vosters established a program record for career walks in the winning effort, surpassing the former mark of 69 established by Jordan Stephans (2010-2013).
Vosters, a graduate student from Kaukauna, Wis. who serves as both the team's durable shortstop and lead-off hitter, accomplished the feat on his first walk of the contest. The record-breaking 70th walk came on four straight pitches with one out in the fifth.
The Pioneers used five pitchers in the showdown, led by starter Ben Ellifson who allowed five earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk through 5 2/3 innings.
Andrew Stekiel, Connor Nolen, Dawson Kiphart and Jake Nitch each followed with strong efforts, combining to yield one earned run on one hit over the course of the final 3 1/3 innings.
Nolen, a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Poplar Grove, Ill., who came in relief of Stekiel to begin the seventh and earned his second victory of the season to improve his individual record to 2-1 overall, forced three straight fly outs to retire the side.
Nitch, the team's closer, worked the ninth and picked up a save by allowing just one earned run on one hit. Following a lead-off walk and a single, the 6-foot senior right-hander from Gurnee, Ill., showcased his mental toughness and poise by forcing back-to-back fly outs and a game-ending ground out to preserve a victory.
Carroll, which faced Centre in back-to-back road games to begin the season, won the three-game series 2-1.
Centre, 8-10 overall, collected 10 hits, committed four errors and stranded five baserunners.

GAME 2 (vs. Birmingham-Southern on Monday)
Carroll struggled to get on track in the final game of the six-game road trip, falling to Birmingham-Southern College 12-1 in seven innings Monday.
Birmingham Southern, which improved to 15-4 overall, scored single runs in the top of the first and second, three in the fourth and seven in the sixth to pull away.
Carroll scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to right field by Josh Kolb, who finished 2-for-3.
The Pioneers generated just four hits, committed an uncharacteristic five errors and stranded eight baserunners.
Carroll utilized six pitchers in the contest including starter Elliot Elm, Zach Tuss, Connor Kelly, Andrew Stekiel, Griffin Klein and Connor Nolen.
Elm, a 6-foot-2 freshman right-hander from South Milwaukee, Wis., gained valuable experience in taking the loss by allowing two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks through 3 1/3 innings.
Birmingham-Southern amassed 13 hits but stranded 11 runners on base.
