NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Carroll University men's tennis team lost to intra-state league rival and traditional powerhouse Carthage College 9-0 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin dual meet at the Princeton Club on Friday evening.
It was the conference opener for Carroll, which dropped to 1-6 overall.
Carthage, ranked No. 39 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, improved to 16-1 overall.
The Firebirds earned six straight-set victories in the singles category with the effort.
Carroll's most intriguing battle came at No. 2 singles as
Luke Barter lost to Carthage's Myles Krzewinski 6-1, 6-2.
Barter, a junior from Buffalo Grove, Ill., dropped to 1-6 in dual competition and 2-8 overall.
Ben Pierson came in riding the momentum of four consecutive nonconference victories at No. 5 singles but fell in straight sets to Carthage's Andre Antreassian 6-0, 6-0.
Pierson, a junior from Janesville, Wis., dropped to 4-3 in duals and 5-5 overall.
Jordan Nowell entered conference competition having won three straight at No. 6 singles but fell in straight sets to Carthage's Hayden Friese 6-0, 6-1.
Nowell, a senior from Waukesha, Wis., dropped to 3-4 in duals and 5-4 overall.
The Pioneers are scheduled to face Milwaukee School of Engineering in a nonconference dual at the Princeton Club on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
