WAUKESHA, Wis. -
Brad Vosters went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs as the Carroll University baseball team defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 15-4 in a seven-inning nonconference game at Frame Park on Monday afternoon.
It was the second home-field victory of the season for Carroll, which snapped a string of back-to-back losses and improved to 7-10 overall.
The Pioneers generated 15 runs for the third time this year, powered by an aggressive 10-hit offensive attack.
Justin Baker followed with three hits, two runs scored and drove in a run for Carroll, which finished with four extra-base hits.
Benton Holly contributed three RBIs with
Casey Mir and
Mitchell Massino each driving in two runs.
Josh Kolb and
Cole Haugh each drove in one run in the rout.
Carroll erased an early 2-0 deficit by answering with four runs on three hits in the momentum-building bottom of the first inning as Vosters, the team's durable veteran shortstop and lead-off hitter, scored on a bases-loaded walk and Mir tied the game by scoring as the result of a fielder's choice.
Holly also scored on a fielder's choice and Haugh delivered an RBI single to right field during the early offensive spree.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to extend the lead to 13-2.
Vosters and Baker each scored on passed balls and Massino had an RBI sacrifice fly out to center field in the three-run second.
Kolb scored as the result of a bases-loaded hit batsman, Baker delivered an RBI single to center field and
Matt Pestel scored on an error in the three-run third.
Vosters responded with a two-run double to center field and Mir followed with an RBI groundout in the three-run fourth.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which fell victim to 10 strikeouts and managed just six hits in the outing, scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to trim the deficit to 13-4.
Carroll's final runs came in the sixth on a two-run triple to right field by Holly.
Brett Buzzelli was the starting pitcher for Carroll, allowing two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks through three complete innings.
Buzzelli, a 5-foot-10 sophomore right-hander from Homer Glen, Ill., threw 46 pitches in facing 12 batters in the contest.
Bryce Spaulding pitched the final four innings to earn his first victory of the season, yielding one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Spaulding, a 6-2 junior right-hander from Racine, Wis., finished with 52 pitches in facing 16 batters retiring the side in order in the seventh capped by a game-ending fly out to center field.
Matthew Schulenburg went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Wisconsin Lutheran, which dropped to 3-7 overall. Nick Poblocki added a two-run home run for the Warriors.
