Pioneers fall to Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin on final day; drop to 5-6 in conference standings

DECATUR, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team finished with a 1-3 record following a difficult two-day, four-game College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin weekend road trip.
Carroll, 5-6 in the conference standings and 12-17 overall, lost to Illinois Wesleyan 9-3 to begin the final day of the trip Saturday, followed by a 5-3 loss to Millikin University in the finale.
The Pioneers have been outscored by a 17-6 margin over the course of their last three games.
Lane Scott, a freshman designated hitter/left fielder from Chicago, Ill., was a bright spot as he finished a combined 3-for-8 during the final two games for Carroll, highlighted by his first official collegiate home run and a double.

vs. Illinois Wesleyan
Scott went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run to lead Carroll, which generated five hits to conclude its three-game series versus the Titans with a 1-2 record.
Casey Mir, Benton Holly and Matt Pestel each added one hit for the Pioneers, who stranded 10 baserunners in the contest.
Carroll scored its three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including an RBI single to left field by Pestel, who eventually scored as the result of a bases-loaded walk. The Pioneers' other run came on an RBI single to center field by Holly.
Brett Buzzelli took the pitching loss, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and no walks through four complete innings.
Illinois Wesleyan improved to 6-3 in conference and 15-11 overall.

Carroll jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a single to right field by Holly followed by a single to left field from Trevor Benz.
Millikin, 4-6 in conference and 17-12 overall, answered with two runs in the fourth to tie the game 2-2.
Carroll regained a one-run lead in the sixth on a solo home run to left field by Scott but the lead was short lived as Millikin scored three runs in the seventh to pull away.
Mir went 3-for-3 with a double and scored a run to help power an 11-hit offensive attack for the Pioneers, who stranded nine baserunners.
Brad Vosters, who currently leads the team with a .333 batting average, contributed two hits with Mason Hege, Thomas Ward and Josh Kolb each adding one hit.
