In the discus, Hermsen jumped out to the front of the pack with his opening throw of 46.89 meters. After falling down to eighth in the finals, Hermsen's first finals throw of 51.77 meters jumped back to re-take the lead. It was his fifth throw that reached 52.95 meters. Hermsen remains first in the nation in the Division III discus.
 
In the shot put, Hermsen's first two throws did not record marks. Hermsen needed 16.07 to reach the finals, but finished 12^th with a throw of 15.55 meters. Hermsen's season-best reached 17^th in the nation.
