VERONA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team lost to Edgewood College 6-5 in a 10-inning nonconference game at Stampfl Field on Wednesday evening.
It was the second consecutive road loss and third by a one-run margin this season for Carroll, which dropped to 14-19 overall.
Tied 5-5 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, Edgewood scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk-off single to left field.
Edgewood, 17-13 overall, trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth but erased the deficit by answering with a single run in the sixth, three runs in the eighth and a game-tying two-out run-scoring double to left field in the ninth.
Mason Hege went 3-for-4 with three doubles to power an 11-hit offensive attack for Carroll, which finished with four extra-base hits but stranded 11 runners on base.
The Pioneers collected the first run of the game in the top of the first as
Lane Scott delivered an RBI single to right field and extended the lead to 2-0 in the second on a run-scoring single by
Bennet Becker.
Carroll scored its final three runs in the sixth as
Nick Angus scored on an error,
Brad Vosters delivered an RBI double down the right-field line and
Trevor Benz added a run-scoring single to left-center field.
Scott, Becker and Vosters each followed with two hits for the Pioneers.
Carroll utilized five pitchers including starter
Elliot Elm,
Connor Kelly,
Dawson Kiphart,
Connor Nolen and
Jake Nitch.
Elm, a 6-foot-2 230-pound right-hander from South Milwaukee, Wis., worked seven strong innings allowing one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. He finished with 82 pitches in facing 27 batters, forcing 14 fly outs and three ground outs.
Jake Nitch, a senior right-hander from Gurnee, Ill., took the hard-luck loss, dropping to 1-3 overall.
