WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team finished the 2022 season by celebrating five seniors. The Pioneers faced the Carthage Firebirds and finished the game down 5-26.
Zach Mehrtens finished with a hat trick, while
Spencer Lautner and
Joe Harrison led with seven ground balls.
The Pioneers (1-10, 0-6 CCIW) got off 20 shots against the Firebirds, while facing 51. In just his second career game in the cage,
Thaddeus Scott recorded 11 saves, including five in the second quarter. Carroll and the Firebirds tallied 16 turnovers each, while Carroll went 13-18 on clear attempts.
Joe Harrison won 10 face offs as well.
Carroll was held scoreless in the first quarter, as the Firebirds scored 10 goals. Mehrtens broke the Pioneer scoreless streak with a goal less than two minutes into the second quarter. Mehrtens scored again four minutes later assisted by
Josh Kovach. Mehrten's hat trick came in the second quarter after his third goal to cut the deficit to 10. The Firebirds took an 18-3 lead into halftime, where an hour lightning delay postponed the contest.
With a running clock second half to avoid storms,
Isaac Williams scored unassisted early on in the half. Kovach picked up a goal to start the fourth quarter, while the Firebirds went on to win after another lightning strike ended the game with 2:00 minutes to play.
