WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team finished with a perfect home record for the second time in the last three seasons after a 17-3 victory against Augustana College on Saturday afternoon.
Clara Jelacic recorded five points, eight caused turnovers, and 10 draw controls. Jelacic reached 300 career points with her final goal, becoming one of five active players in NCAA DIII Women's Lacrosse with at least 300 career points.
Grace Brockman led the team with six points on four goals.
The Pioneers (9-6, 4-2 CCIW) held the Vikings to just 13 total shots while recording 31 of their own. In goal,
Rebecca McDaniel tallied four saves all in the first half. Carroll finished 18-21 on their clear attempts and caused 15 turnovers, led by Jelacic, the nation's leader in the category. The Pios won 15 draw controls and won 29 ground balls.
The Vikings were the first to strike five minutes into the first quarter, scoring off a caused turnover and a successful clear attempt. Jelacic won the ensuing draw control and scored a man-up goal after a yellow card was issued. The freshman duo of
Abby Stas and Brockman connected on a goal to give Carroll the lead which they never relinquished. Stas followed up her first goal of the game with two draw controls and two more goals three minutes later.
Janu Patel and Brockman got in on the scoring, and Jelacic scored the Pios' seventh goal of the first quarter with six seconds remaining.
Lexi Kaltenberg, Brockman, and
Mina Zastrow all scored in the second quarter while holding the Augie offense to zero. Brockman scored three of her four goals in the second.
After a slow start to the second half, the Pioneers surrendered Augustana's second goal on a free position shot.
Katrina Hardin scored her first goal of the game soon after to keep the lead at 11. With time expiring in the running clock, Kaltenberg scored a free position shot to take a 12-goal lead going into the fourth. Jelacic connected with Hardin and Patel scored again early in the quarter before Augie could respond with their third. Jelacic scored her 47
th goal of the season to hit the 300-point milestone, assisted by Stas.
The Pioneers will enter the CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament as the #3 seed on Wednesday, May 4. The Pioneers will face #2 seed Carthage in Kenosha.
