KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team split with fierce intra-state conference rival Carthage College in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday, winning the pressure-packed opening game 2-1 in 11 innings but losing the finale 20-0 in seven innings.
Carroll, which entered the twin bill riding the momentum of back-to-back victories and has won three of its last four, is currently 4-2 in the highly contested conference standings and 11-13 overall.
GAME 1
As the first game remained tied 1-1 in the top of the 11th with the bases loaded and one out,
Mitchell Massino drove in what proved to be the winning run on a fielder's choice.
On the critical sequence, Massino responded to the pressure by delivering a ground ball toward the shortstop who opted for the high-percentage force out at second base.
Clay Schult scored the winning run after reaching base on a lead-off single down the right field line and advancing to third on a double to left field by
Benton Holly.
Nick Angus was hit by a pitch to set the stage for the winning play.
Casey Mir went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the resourceful Pioneers, who managed four only hits (including two doubles) in earning their second one-run victory of the season.
Carthage scored the first and what became its only run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth on a single to left field.
Mir scored from third with the game-tying run as the result of a costly error with one out in the ninth.
Brett Buzzelli was the starting pitcher for Carroll, making his longest appearance of the season by working nine complete innings while allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Buzzelli, a 5-foot-10 sophomore right hander from Homer Glen, Ill., faced 33 batters and efficiently forced 12 fly outs and 10 ground outs in the process.
Buzzelli had a no-hit shutout working through three innings before surrendering a lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth.
Dawson Kiphart, who came in relief of Buzzelli to start the bottom of the 10th, answered the call with a strong outing highlighted by back-to-back fly outs and inning-ending ground out.
Kiphart, an imposing 6-3 240-pound veteran right-hander from Two Rivers, Wis., earned the victory to improve his individual record to 2-0 overall and has responded with an unblemished two innings in his last two late-inning relief appearances. In nine appearances this season through 9 1/3 innings of work, he has given up four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk en route to a 3.86 earned run average.
Connor Nolen worked the 11th, yielding no runs on one hit to earn his first save of the season.
Nolen, a sophomore right-hander from Poplar Grove, Ill., began the inning with a strikeout, forced a ground out and surrendered a single to center field before snapping back with a game-ending strikeout.
