WHEATON, Ill. – The Carroll University men's track and field team finished up the two-day 2022 CCIW Men's Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 7 on campus of Wheaton College. The Pioneers finished third overall for the second-straight outdoor season with 110 points. Carroll collected 19 all-conference titles, broke three school records, and
Steven Hermsen earned his second-straight CCIW Field Athlete of the Meet after gaining 24 team points through three events.
In track events,
Kevin Lind earned two all-conference titles, first in the 100 meter dash. Lind finished top-five in the event with a time of 11.12.
Peter Marra finished top-three in both the 110 hurdles and the 400 hurdles. Marra was just .05 seconds off the 110 meter title. Joining Marra in the 4000-meter hurdles was newcomer
Augustus Herman.
Trenton Nickel earned all-conference honors in his first CCIW Championships, earning third in the men's 400m. In the 800m,
Nathan Raatz collected team points and earned all-conference as well. Both Pioneer relay teams earned all-conference, starting with the 4x100 in fourth (
Patrick Send,
Troy Burkert,
Sheldon Achs, Lind) and the 4x400 in second (Marra, Nickel, Benes, Raatz). In the distance events,
Spencer Kirsteatter took home top-three finishes in the 5,000m and the 10,000m races.
In field events, Hermsen was all-conference in the shot put, hammer, and the CCIW Champion in the discus. Hermsen's discus throw of 58.60 meters broke his Carroll record, broke the CCIW record, and became the eighth longest throw in Division III men's discus history. Hermsen's shot put throw of 15.77 tied the school record in the event, a mark that has not been hit since 1972. In the Hammer,
Jimmy Hinkley finished second with a new school record throw of 56.37 meters, also setting a PR for the junior. Noah Strevler added a top-five finish in the javelin throw, hitting a PR as well. Three Pioneers earned all-conference honors in the triple jump, Lind,
David Burgess, and
Marshawn Fullilove. Burgess also finished top-eight in the high jump.
Other awards handed out to the Pioneers was the CCIW Elite 25 award to Hermsen, and the men's outdoor track and field RESPECT Award to
Logan Froseth.
