GLENDALE, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team tried to complete their comeback in the second half but couldn't slow down Concordia Wisconsin as the Pioneers fell 3-5 at Bavarian Soccer Club in Glendale, Wisconsin. Four Pioneers tallied points in the loss.
The Pioneers (1-3) led the Falcons in total shots and held them to only four in the second half, but 7 of the Falcons' 12 shots were on target.
Josh Venouziou and
Nico Hinten Llorens led the team with three shots each.
Tyler Hanson recorded two saves in the first half, but his counterpart
Jesper Johannassen wasn't able to record one in the second 45-minute half. Carroll led the Falcons in corner kicks and offsides. In the Pios' 39 minutes with the ball in their possession, they spent 40% in their attacking midfield and just 21% in the opponents' box.
Hinten Llorens put the game's first goal on the board with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute of the game. The Falcons tied the ball game three minutes later and after a free kick given to them by the Pios. After thirty minutes, Concordia took the lead on a deep shot in the 40' minute. The Falcons added one more goal to their lead by one with just ticks remaining before halftime.
The Falcons scored once more in the 84th minute to take a 4-1 advantage, but
Giovanni Zagato and
Ryan Coughlin connected on a goal that put the Pios back within two goals shortly after. After a Pioneer yellow card, the Falcons scored again to go up 5-2.
Thomas Rodriguez and Zagato worked together on a goal in the 87th minute. The Pios tried for one more attempt at goal, but the time ran out.
Carroll will return to Schneider Stadium and host Albion on Sunday, September 11, at 12 PM. Carroll beat Albion in Michigan a season ago in a 3-2 victory.
