WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team grabbed their second straight win at home with a thrilling 3-1 victory over the University of Dubuque on Wednesday night. This marks the first-ever victory against the Spartans.
Josh Gonzaga finished with a goal and an assist on four shots.
The Pioneers (3-3) get back to .500 with their second straight victory. Carroll and Dubuque tied each with 14 shots with six on target, but it was
Tyler Hanson who came away with more saves in addition to a team save. Carroll had the advantage with possession and corner kicks, holding the ball for 56% of the game, and taking five chances out of the corner. The Pios played with the ball in their attacking box for over 16 minutes in the game.
In a chippy match, Carroll and Dubuque both traded shots, saves, and fouls through the majority of the first half. Gonzaga struck first with a goal in the 30
th minute assisted by
Thomas Rodriguez. As Rodriguez played the ball up the middle, a clean pass up left to a wide-open Gonzaga gave the junior a left-footed shot on goal. Carroll ended the first half with a save by Hanson and two shots off target.
Carroll hit the back of the net again in the second half with the game-winner in the 62
nd minute.
David Perez's first collegiate goal was scored off a rebound from the far post.
Nico Hinten Llorens and Gonzaga both assisted in the pass off the post. Dubuque threatened with a goal in the 79
th minute, making things more intense and chippy on the field. After a free-kick save by Hanson, the keeper kicked it down to the other end of the field for
Josh Venouziou, who played the give-and-go with
Zane Walters to score the final goal of the match.
Carroll takes a well-needed break until Sunday, September 18 when they face off with St. Norbert College in Waukesha for senior day. The Pios haven't played the Green Knights since 2018.
