Men’s Soccer Opens Season on the West Coast

ORANGE, Cali. – The Carroll University men's soccer team opened their season with a match against the Chapman Panthers in Orange, California. This was the first match in program history against the Panthers. The Pios showed signs of talent offensively but fell 3-6. Marti Solanellas Vilella scored twice in his first career game.
 
The Pioneers (0-1) struggled to hold possession of the ball on offense, taking 13 shots to Chapman's 22. The Panthers recorded 12 corner kicks to just three from the Pios. Tyler Hanson displayed miraculous ability, keeping the game in reach for most of the contest with his seven saves. Solanellas Viella led the team with four shots, three of which were on target.  
 
Hanson received four of his seven saves of the night in the first half. Hanson's acrobatic stops kept the Pioneers within distance. Solanellas Vilella's unassisted goal in the 34' minute put the Pioneers on the board for the first time this season. Solanellas Viella had one additional shot on target in the first 45 minutes of the game, but it was thwarted away by the Panther keeper. Paolo Iervolino picked up a yellow card with seconds remaining in the first half.
 
Solanellas Viella scored quickly just :22 seconds into the second half assisted by Jack Daly from the high side of the box. After a touchy penalty inside the box in the 60' minute, Chapman was awarded a penalty kick. The Panthers cashed in and advanced their lead to 4-2. Chapman added to their total with 25 minutes remaining in the contest, going up 5-2. Josh Gonzaga scored his first goal of the season in the 80' minute off the pass from Thomas Rodriguez.
 
The Pioneers will stay out West for another two days and take on La Verne on Sunday at 7 PM PST.
