WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's soccer team picked up their first shutout of the season in the 2-0 victory over Lawrence University on Wednesday night.
Josh Venouziou scored his third goal of the season in the win.
The Pioneers (5-3) smashed 22 shots with 15 attempts on target at the Vikings box, but the Lawrence keeper tallied 14 saves in 90 minutes.
Kevin Ramirez led the group with four shots in 45 minutes.
Tyler Hanson had a quiet not, only facing five shots, and six corners, but coming away with three saves in the first shutout of his season. The Pioneers held possession for 66% of the game.
After seven shot attempts and five corner kicks by the Pios to start the game, Lawrence made a mistake in the 27
th minute and coughed up an own goal off Ramirez's corner kick. Carroll took three more looks at the goal before the end of the first half but couldn't find the back of the net.
Venouziou scored in the 70
th minute after a misplay by the Vikings left him one-on-one with a defender, and soon one-on-one with the keeper. Carroll had four more looks but failed to get past the keeper for a third goal in the win.
The Pioneers will begin the CCIW portion of their season on Saturday, September 24 at home against Millikin. The Pioneers are 2-2 against the Big Blue in the last four meetings.
