WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Carroll University men's soccer team got off to a quick start yet again but was unable to sustain that success for 90 minutes, as Wisconsin-Platteville defeated the CU Pioneers 3-1 at Schneider Stadium on Tuesday night.
Marti Solanellas Vilella scored once again for the Pioneers.
The Pios (1-2) were hounded by a flurry of Platteville shot attempts, including 11 in the first half alone. Carroll on the other hand was held to just two shot attempts. UW-P recorded 16 corner kicks to just two for the Pioneers.
Jesper Johannassen got his first career start in goal, recording four saves in 90 minutes.
Solanellas Vilella scored within the first two minutes of the game, assisted by
Josh Venouziou, on a shot outside of the 18 yard box. Platteville was able to jump back and tie the match off a corner kick set piece in the 21' minute. UW-P added to their total and took the lead at the 30' minute mark, on a free kick that led to a header inside the high part of the box.
After halftime, a risky yellow card by
Matthew Meke led to a penalty kick goal by UW-P. Carroll and Platteville both struggled to maintain solid possession in the second half, as only five shots were tallied by both sides.
The Carroll Pioneers will next see the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday, September 10, with the contest hosted at the Bavarian Soccer club in Glendale, Wisconsin.
