Pios Lose Heartbreaker on the Road

Box Score Chicago, Ill. – The Carroll University men's basketball team loses 61-58 in the final minute against the North Park Vikings. The Pios held North Park 28.8% shooting on the night. However, 22 turnovers proved too costly for Pios. Aaron Wafford had a career-high 21 points to lead the Pios in scoring.

The Pioneers (4-12, 1-6 CCIW) lead for the majority of the game, as each team stayed within six points of one another for the duration of the game. In a game with 11 lead changes, neither team could seem to get it rolling offensively as Carroll shot only shot 38% on the night. The Pios were ready for a defensive test on the road, as they forced 10 turnovers, which in turn led to seven fast break points. The Pios were able to come up with seven steals led by Wafford and Eckahelo Simpson.

The game started off scoreless until Wafford finally drew a foul at the 17:40 mark. After trading buckets, the Pios found themselves up five with 16:17 left in half, which would be the Pios' largest lead of the half. Both teams struggled to find footing in the first half, but a great stingy defense by the Pios and 14 points from Wafford gave Carroll a 30-29 lead going into the half. The Pios came out of the half and gave themselves a four-point lead from an Eckahelo paint shot and Wafford three-pointer. With 16:32 to go in the game, Justin Steinike was fouled on a three-point attempt, where he made all three free throws, giving the Pios a six-point lead. The game was tied with 2:47 to go before the Vikings made a three-pointer to go up. Wafford came back down and answered with a shot of his own to cut the lead to one. The Pios then had to foul with 16 seconds left in the game, giving North Park a three-point advantage. The Pios were unable to get a shot off, losing 58-61.

The Pios look to get back in the win column on January 18, against Wheaton College at 7 PM in Waukesha, Wis.
