Carroll Gets Back On Track With Homecoming Win Against Elmhurst

WAUKESHA, Wis. - After losing two consecutive road games, the Carroll University football team got their season on track Saturday afternoon, returning home for a 62-14 victory against Elmhurst College on a day that also doubled as Carroll's annual Homecoming celebration. The Pioneers gave the home fans plenty to cheer for, out-gaining the Blue Jays in total offensive yards 416-233, while also recording eight sacks, which ties a single game school record.

In a game that saw milestones set left and right, Carroll quarterback Josh Raby also got into the action, throwing six touchdown passes to tie a single game school record, which was originally set 13 years ago. With a pair of field goals in the game, Carroll Kicker Jacob Laurent has now made 25 in his career, which eclipses the previous record of 24, set in 1997. Laurent also has 10 field goals on the season, which ties a school record, and is just four shy of the conference record.

Laurent got Carroll's scoring started mid-way through the first quarter with a 23-yard field goal. Two and a half minutes later, Elmhurst answered with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Andrey Acosta to Jacob Cockrell for what would be the Blue Jays' only lead of the contest. Carroll (4-2, 3-2 CCIW) then took the ensuing possession 58 yards in eight plays, capped off by a three-yard touchdown pass from Raby to Josh Hill. Less than two minutes later, the Pioneers found themselves in the end zone again when Adam Anderson blocked a punt that was returned 13 yards for a touchdown by Cameron Evans for a 17-7 Pios lead. The second quarter was more of the same, with Raby throwing four touchdowns in the period, as Hill caught two more from 35 and 26 yards away, while Reed Breckheimer and Keon Miller caught TDs of 13 and 27 yards, respectively, to give Carroll a 45-7 halftime lead.

Elmhurst (1-5, 0-5 CCIW) scored the only points of the third quarter, with Cockrell catching a 20-yard TD pass from Acosta. Carroll then finished the game with 17 more points in the final quarter, as Austin Eichstaedt got into the action with a four-yard TD reception. Tyler McLain added a one-yard touchdown run after relieving Raby of his duties, while Laurent's record-breaking kick came with two and a half minutes remaining to give the Pioneers their final points of the day.

In addition to his six touchdown passes, Raby also threw for 201 yards without an interception. Hill had a career day, catching seven passes for 114 yards and the three TDs, while Nick Legnaioli led Carroll's rushing attack with 113 yards on 15 carries (7.5 ypc). Defensively, Nick Mantas was a force to be reckoned with, recording six tackles, including five for a loss, three sacks, and one fumble forced. Riley Stobb added five tackles, including 1.5 sacks, as he was part of a defense that allowed just two rushing yards on the day. Elliot Mueller recorded the only interception of the game by either team.

Acosta led Elmhurst with 231 passing yards, with Cockrell catching eight passes for 174 yards and both of the Blue Jays' touchdowns. Defensively, Elmhurst recorded two sacks and recovered one fumble.

The Pioneers will try to build on this performance next week when they'll remain at home to battle 13th-ranked Wheaton (Ill.). That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, and can be seen live at https://gopios.com/watch/?Live=136&type=Live.
