GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO - Carroll's women's basketball team won their fifth consecutive game Saturday afternoon, defeating McMurry by a score of 73-59 on the Pios' second and final day of the Puerto Rico Clasico. The game featured three ties and four lead changes, before the Pioneers pulled away in the final quarter, which saw them outscore McMurry 19-9.
Carroll (10-3) took the game's first lead thanks to
Olivia Rangel, who scored the first five points of the contest, including a 3-pointer that broke a scoreless tie. The Pios would later take a seven-point lead before taking a two-point advantage into the second quarter. Carroll maintained that lead until the final minutes of the first half when McMurry (10-4) tied the score at 28.
Allison Thompson then put the Pioneers back in the lead with a layup just seconds before halftime.
McMurry would take their first lead of the day in the opening minutes of the third period on a jumper by Taya Bridges. They would lead by as many as three, until a
Chloe Halverson free throw put Carroll back in the lead for good midway through the third. After taking a four-point advantage into the final period, Carroll used a 9-3 run to take a double-digit lead mid-way through that quarter.
Carroll shot 42 percent (26-62) from the field during the game. They were led by
Emilie Wizner, who scored 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, to go along with six rebounds. Rangel added 21 points, six boards, and five assists, while
Natalie Gricius posted 14 points and six rebounds.
McMurry finished the game with a shooting percentage of .379 (22-58). Emily Holland scored a team-best 22 points, to go along with six rebounds. Kylie Flippin added a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards.
The Pioneers will now return to the United States, with their next game taking place on Wednesday at Wheaton College. That contest will begin at 7 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill.
