Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's basketball team won 85-66 to get their second straight win and took down the Augustana Vikings. The Pios shot 52.4% from the field. The Pios shot well from the three-point line making 16 on the night. This ties the record for three-pointers made in a game, originally set in 2012 against Lake Forest College.
Justin Steinike led the way with a career-high in both three-pointers made (7-11) and points finishing the night with 23.
Aaron Wafford also contributed 16 on the night.
The Pioneers (6-17, 3-11 CCIW) shot 55.2% from the arc as a team. The bench scored 24 points in the victory
Justin Gruber contributed eight points, along with
Evan Bland who had a career-high eight points.
Paradisio Dante had a career-high in assists with five, helping tie Carroll's season-high of 18 assists on the night. The defense was also flying around as Carroll forced 13 turnovers from seven steals led by Gruber and Dante with two apiece.
The game started with both teams going at each other trading baskets. Dante would start the game out with and-one layup to make the game 3-0. As the half continued the score would stay within four points of each other until Carroll went on a 5-0 run to claim an eight-point lead. The run was set by a Wafford three-pointer and Dante layup. The two teams would continue to trade baskets until
Kobe Simpson (nine points) made a last-second shot to send the Pios into the half up 38-32. Steinike would hit a three-point coming out of the half to push the lead to 9. However, Augustana would make a quick 8-0 run and force a timeout.
Taylor Jannsen drew up a good play in the time out, leading to a Kobe three-pointer to push the lead to 44-40. Carroll would keep getting a stop and scoring when Gruber hit a three-pointer to push the lead to ten with 10:14 to go in the game. Carroll would keep the pedal down as the lead never got back within single digits. The Vikings would try their best to go on a run, but Carroll had an answer every time. With 7:57 to go,
Ethan Balinao would make a three-point shot to lift the lead to 16. As the game continued, Steinike made his seventh three of the night to push the lead to 21 with 1:26 to go in the game. Carroll would finish the game winning, 85-66 and one of the best performances of the year for the Pios.
