WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College at Frame Park on Tuesday evening, winning the opening game 5-3 and the finale 9-5.
It was the first double-header sweep of the season and third consecutive home-field victory for Carroll, which has won four of its last five and improved to 7-7 overall.
Six of the Pioneers' seven victories have come by four runs or less.
GAME 1
Casey Mir, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior right fielder from Menomonee Falls, Wis. and the team's leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base to help propel a nine-hit offensive attack in the seven-inning opener for Carroll.
Eli Syverson contributed two hits and
Justin Baker had two RBIs for the Pioneers, who finished with three hits for extra bases in the contest.
Carroll collected the first runs of the game in the momentum-building bottom of the first inning on a two-run single to left field by Baker.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored a single run in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Carroll responded with three runs on four hits in what proved to be a decisive fifth, powered by a run-scoring double to right-center field by
Trevor Benz, what became a game-winning RBI single to center field from
Joey Appino and run-scoring grounout by
Thomas Ward.
Wisconsin Lutheran added two runs on two errors in the sixth but couldn't get any closer.
The Pioneers utilized five pitchers in the showdown including starter
Jorge Rodriguez,
Connor Kelly,
Andy Buskohl,
Josh Streu and
Connor Nolen, combining for a five-hitter in the process.
Rodriguez, a resourceful 5-11, 145-pound junior right-hander from Naranjito, Puerto Rico, earned his first victory of the season to improve to 1-1 overall.
He allowed one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks through 4 1/3 innings, finishing with 77 pitches in facing 18 batters (including five ground outs).
Nolen pitched the critical final inning to earn his third save of the year, responding with back-to-back strikeouts and game-ending groundout.
GAME 2
Joey Appino, a 6-foot, 180-pound freshman shortstop from Loves Park, Ill., went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, a double and three RBIs to fuel Carroll's efficient eight-hit attack in the finale.
Wisconsin Lutheran answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to claim a 2-1 lead.
Carroll responded with what became a decisive eight-run rally in the fifth to pull away.
Nick Angus scored on an error,
Casey Mir followed with an RBI single down the left-field line and Appino delivered a two-run double down the right-field line to help ignite the key spree.
Thomas Ward had an RBI triple down the right-field line and later scored on an error.
Benton Holly collected a run-scoring single to left field and eventually scored as the result of a wild pitch to round out the explosive inning.
Angus finished 2-for-3 with a double for the Pioneers, who finished with four extra-base hits.

Erik Jaschinski.
Rivera, a 5-10, 145-pound sophomore right-hander from Chicago, Ill., earned a victory to improve to 2-0 overall, yielding one earned run on two hits with no strikeouts and two walks in 1 1/3 innings of work. He finished with an efficient 18 pitches in facing seven batters.
Wisconsin Lutheran dropped to 1-10 overall.
