CHICAGO, Ill. – The Carroll University softball team split with non-conference opponent the University of Chicago on Thursday afternoon in the Windy City.
GAME 1
The Pioneers (11-14) were shutout despite eight hits against Chicago in game one, falling 0-4.
Abby Curtis and
Kiana Johnson had multi-hit games and
Andrea Kuhne pitched all six innings.
Kuhne allowed five hits and four earned runs on three walks and a strikeout. Curtis stole two bases and was caught stealing once. Carroll had four batters strikeout and left eight on the base paths.
Chicago put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third after Carroll left a runner on third in the half inning prior. The Maroons added two more an inning later.
Carroll had prime chances in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Johnson and
Jessie Nanut were on first and second with one out but the Pios couldn't convert in the sixth. In the seventh, Curtis and
Reagan Goluch were on second and third, but an infield popup ended the game two pitches later.
GAME 2
The Pioneers (12-14) came back after allowing five runs in an inning, to pick up a 6-5 win in game two against Chicago.
Grace Bradley came in the game in relief and picked up the win, while
Bridget Rath homered in the fourth.
Bradley got the win after
Breanna Roberts got the start. Roberts went 2.1 innings with three hits and one earned run. Bradley went the final 4.2 allowing just one hit and one earned run with a strikeout.
Sydney Raddeman doubled and stole a base to go along with an RBI and two runs scored.
Carroll struck first thanks to Raddeman's one-out double in the top of the first. Raddeman scored after a fielding error during Johnson's at-bat.
The Pios surrendered four runs in the bottom of the third, stemming from a leadoff single. Bradley entered with the bases loaded and surrendered four runs due to errors in the field by the defense.
Down 1-5 in the top of the fourth, Rath hit a solo shot home run to right center to bring the deficit down to three runs. In the top of the fifth, Carroll took their lead back with a four-run inning, highlighted by RBI from Curtis, Raddeman,
Lauren Harshbarger, and Johnson.
Bradley was lights out after the Pios took the lead, only putting one runner on base over the next nine at-bats by the Maroons.
Carroll will be back home at Kilgour Field on Saturday, April 15 to face the Illinois Wesleyan Titans at noon and 2 PM.
