NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team made a long hike to Saint Mary's College in Indiana on Sunday afternoon, and came home with a 15-2 victory.
Rebecca Hallman tied the single-game record for most assists in a game with six, while also adding three goals.
Samantha Hurd led with four goals, while
Clara Jelacic caused seven turnovers and gathered seven ground balls.
The Pioneers (8-2) outshot the Belles 8-1 in the first quarter to set the tone with a 5-0 opening quarter. Carroll did commit 29 turnovers, including 14 in the second half, but were 15-23 on clear attempts, and picked up 21 ground balls. Jelacic won nine draw controls of the team's 16. Carroll recorded 10 saves in the game, five to
Alicia Van Dale who got the win, and five to
Katrina Hardin who played in goal for the first time in her Pioneer career in the fourth quarter.
Hardin scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Hallman within the first minute. Hurd tacked on one more goal before both teams were in a standoff for seven minutes. Hallman broke the scoring silence with an unassisted shot, and she followed it up with an assist to Hurd less than a minute later. Hurd and
Lexi Kaltenberg combined on Carroll's fifth and final goal of the first quarter with 2:16 remaining. Hardin, Kaltenberg, and Jelacic were involved in Carroll's first two goals of the second quarter, giving Carroll a 7-0 lead. Kaltenberg was on the scoring end of the stick the next goal out for Carroll. SMC gained one goal back but Jelacic gained the next draw control and scored off a pass from Hallman. Jelacic caused a turnover and picked up another ground ball just before the end of the first half with Carroll up 9-1.
Abby Stas scored her first goal of the game to kick off the second half, and Hallman scored a free-position shot after a foul by the Belles inside the eight-meter arc. Carroll scored once more before Saint Mary's scored their second goal of the game, but the Pios got one back taking a 13-2 lead into the fourth quarter. Hallman assisted and then scored on the last two goals of the game for Carroll, as they marched away with a victory.
The Pios will begin CCIW play on Saturday, April 8 against North Central in Naperville, Illinois.
