CHICAGO, Ill. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Chicago on Wednesday night in a CCIW contest, 4-20.
Clara Jelacic and
Rebecca Hallman both had two points, while Jelacic pulled in nine ground balls. Despite the loss, the Pioneers have clinched a top-two seed in the CCIW and will host the first round of the CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
The Pioneers (12-3, 4-1 CCIW) kept the battle with the Maroons close early on but Chicago didn't let up in the second and fourth quarter. Carroll faced 30 shots while getting off 19.
Alicia Van Dale earned six saves, three of which came in the third quarter. The Pios went 5-6 on clear attempts in the second quarter but were 13-22 in the game.
Chicago struck first and scored five goals in the first quarter to set the tone. The Pios snapped their scoreless streak with a Jelacic goal assisted by
Grace Brockman. The Maroons scored once more towards the end of the quarter but they restarted the running clock with an 11-1 lead going into halftime.
The Pios scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter, started by a woman-up goal by
Katrina Hardin assisted by Hallman. Jelacic won the ensuing draw control, and
Lexi Kaltenberg scored off a pass from Jelacic. Chicago re-took an 11-goal lead right before the end of the third quarter. Carroll scored their fourth goal in the fourth quarter, thanks to a free-position goal by Hallman. The Maroons scored three more times after the Pios and took the victory.
The Pioneers will finish the regular season on Saturday. Carroll will host either Illinois Wesleyan or Carthage on Wednesday, May 3 at Schneider Stadium in the 2023 CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals.
