WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team was swept by Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Frame Park on Saturday afternoon, losing the opener 13-3 and the second game 16-4.
It was the sixth consecutive loss for Carroll, which dropped to 7-8 in the highly contested conference standings and 15-18 overall.
Augustana is in sole possession of first place (13-2), North Central is second (10-5), Millikin and North Park are tied for third (9-6), Carroll and Illinois Wesleyan are tied for fourth (7-8) and Wheaton is fifth (6-9) in the race for the top six spots in the upcoming CCIW Tournament.
The Pioneers, who are seeking a berth in the prestigious league tournament for the third straight year, have three conference games remaining including a single road game versus intra-state rival Carthage (April 30) and a home-field doubleheader against league-leading No. 25-ranked Augustana (May 6).
GAME 1
Trevor Benz,
Connor Rodgers,
Mason Hege and
Nick Herzog each collected a hit in the opener for Carroll, which finished with one extra-base hit and stranded nine baserunners.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single to left field by Herzog to trim the deficit to 5-2.
Carroll's final run came in the sixth on an RBI single to left field by Hege.
The Pioneers utilized four pitchers in the contest including starter
Brett Buzzelli,
Andrew Stekiel,
Noah Hoffman and
Jexel Valentin.
Buzzelli, a junior right-hander from Homer Glen, Ill., took the loss by allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk through 4 1/3 innings.
GAME 2
Hege, Herzog,
Casey Mir,
Justin Baker,
Joey Appino and
Eddie Synek each had a hit in the finale for the Pioneers, who registered three extra-base hits but stranded five baserunners.
Carroll, which collected six hits, scored the first runs of the battle in the bottom of the first on a two-run double to right-center field by Baker.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 3-1 in the second on an RBI groundout from Mir.
Carroll broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Synek, proving to be the Pioneers' final run of the game.

Andy Buskohl,
Connor Kelly,
Connor Nolen,
Erik Jaschinski and
Joey Rivera.
Starovich, a senior left-hander from Pleasant Prairie, Wis., took the loss by yielding three earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and no walks through five complete innings.
Millikin improved to 9-6 in conference and 23-14 overall.
