Benton Holly, a senior third baseman from Mundelein, Ill., went 2-for-3 highlighted by a one-out solo home run to left-center field in the top of the seventh inning as sixth-seeded Carroll University baseball team lost to top-seeded regular-season champion No. 20-ranked Augustana College 11-1 in eight innings in the opening round of the College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin Tournament at Swanson Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the first game of the double-elimination tournament for Carroll, which advanced to the prestigious conference competition for the third consecutive year under veteran head coach
Stein Rear.
The Pioneers, 16-22 overall, are scheduled to face fifth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University, 18-22, in a second-round matchup at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Illinois Wesleyan lost to second-seeded North Central 15-5 in seven innings in another first-round game Wednesday.
Both games were limited to eight innings as the 10-run mercy rule was enforced.
It was the second homer of the season for Holly, who is the Carroll program's all-time career leader in home runs with 24.
The Pioneers utilized six pitchers in the contest including starter
Nolan Fehrman,
Daniel Kalinowski,
Noah Hoffman,
Josh Streu,
Jexel Valentin and
Conor Dunlavy.
Fehrman, a junior right-hander from Slinger, Wis., took the loss by allowing two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk through 1 1/3 innings.
Augustana, 35-6, scored three runs on three hits in what became a decisive bottom of the first ignited by a game-winning two-run homer from junior third baseman Alex Simon. Simon went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to power a 15-hit offensive attack.
