Kaitlin Gawelski contributed a team-high 18 kills and 22 digs as the Carroll University women's volleyball team defeated Dominican University 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-11 in the opening round of the St. Norbert College Invitational at the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center on Friday evening.
It was the second four-set victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 2-3 overall.
Rebekah Andreae followed with 10 kills and three blocks for the Pioneers, who had a combined total of 51 kills in the contest (including a team-best 15 kills and .333 hitting percentage in the decisive fourth set).
Carroll maintained a consistent offensive attack, finishing with double-digit kills in all four sets.
Ashley Konecki finished with nine kills and two blocks for Carroll, which generated 63 points, 79 digs, 48 assists, seven blocks and five service aces.
Maggie McGough had 20 digs and
Payton Depies added 39 assists.
With the meet tied 1-1, the Pioneers showcased their determination in the pivotal third set by breaking a 20-20 tie with a resilient 5-0 run.
Leading 8-7 in the fourth set, Carroll responded with what proved to be a critical, momentum-building run powered on eight unanswered points.
Carroll closed the match with a 10-4 run capped on a victory-clinching kill by Gawelski.
