Carroll Rebounds With Home Win Against Augustana

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's football team won for the second time in three weeks Saturday afternoon, defeating conference foe Augustana (IL) by a score of 30-20. The Pioneers out-gained Augie in total offensive yards 412-335, while the Pios also averaged 6.6 yards per play.

Despite the final result, it was Augustana (3-3, 2-3 CCIW) who got on the scoreboard first, crossing the goal line on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Liam Crawley to Breyden Smith, which capped a nine-play, 92-yard drive. Carroll (3-3, 2-3 CCIW) would answer on the ensuing possession, needing only three plays to go 74 yards, capped by a 70-yard TD pass to Reed Breckheimer from Charlie King, who was making his first career collegiate start. After a Matthew Swink field goal from 30 yards gave the Pios their first lead of the day, Augustana scored with two and a half minutes remaining in the half. The lead would change hands twice more before the half in this see-saw battle. King found Cameron Evans for a five-yard TD pass with 34 seconds remaining to give Carroll a 16-14 advantage, but a long kickoff return gave Augie a short field, which they turned into three points with a 38-yard field goal as the clock hit zero to give the Vikings a 17-16 halftime lead.

Augustana kicker Joren Clem converted his third field goal of the afternoon from 38 yards out to cap the initial possession of the second half to give the Vikings a four-point advantage, but Carroll answered on the following possession with a 38-yard touchdown run by Mikey Coleman to give the Pioneers the lead for good. They would add an insurance score on the first play of the fourth quarter, scoring on King's third touchdown pass - a 27-yard TD to Titan Kilgore.

In addition to his trio of TD passes, King completed 14-of-19 passes for 238 yards, while adding 41 rushing yards on 10 carries. Coleman led the Pios with 63 yards rushing on eight totes, while Marcus Johnson and Nick Legnaioli finished with 42 and 39 yards rushing, respectively. Santiago Rios led all Pio receivers with five catches for 88 yards.

Defensively, Carroll was led by Jake Binkowski's 10 tackles, while Will Campbell added seven tackles, including 1.5 for a loss and one sack. Luke Brosig also notched a sack, while Riley Stobb and Clayton Huber combined on another. Brosig also forced a fumble, which was recovered by Logan Sarkkinen for the game's only turnover.

Augustana quarterback Liam Crawley completed 20-of-38 passes for two touchdowns. CCIW leading rusher Mike DiGioia added 110 yards on 18 carries (6.1 ypc), while Breyden Smith led the Vikings in receiving with nine catches for 106 yards and a score.

The Pioneers will try to build on this win next weekend when they'll hit the road for a two-game stretch, beginning with next Saturday's game at Elmhurst. That contest will begin at 1 p.m. in Elmhurst, Ill.
