ELMHURST, Ill. - Carroll's football team won for the third time in their last four games Saturday afternoon, defeating Elmhurst convincingly, 45-14. The Pioneers also out-gained the Blue Jays in total offensive yards, 389-217, while holding Elmhurst to under 100 passing yards.
The Pioneers (4-3, 3-3 CCIW) wasted no time, scoring the game's first points less than two minutes into the contest when
David Simmons caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from
Charlie King. The Pios added to that lead late in the second quarter on a 21-yard TD run by
Reed Breckheimer, before a
Matthew Swink 21-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half gave the team a 17-0 halftime lead.
Carroll continued to pour it on in the second half, as King would score on a 28-yard run. Just two minutes later, he would complete a 32-yard touchdown pass to
Titan Kilgore to give the Pios a 31-0 advantage. Elmhurst (2-5, 2-4 CCIW) scored their first points of the day mid-way through the quarter when Darius Lane found paydirt from three yards out. The Pioneers saved two touchdowns for the final quarter, as
Jake Binkowski took a punt return 45 yards to the house, before
Jaxon Case crossed the goal line on a four-yard run.
King completed 14-of-23 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 26 yards on six carries (4.3 ypc) and another score. Case led the Pios' rushing attack with 50 yards on 10 carries (5.0 ypc), Breckheimer gained 40 yards on five totes (8.0 ypc), while also serving as the team's top receiver with game-highs of six receptions for 90 yards. Defensively, Carroll was led by
Drake Emanuel and
Evan Griffiths with six tackles apiece. The team finished with three sacks and one fumble recovery.
Elmhurst was led by Taveon Porter's 107 yards on 12 carries (8.9 ypc), while John Odom completed 9-of-22 passes for 82 yards. Jace Zeffiro led all players with 14 tackles.
The Pioneers will try to keep things rolling next week when they'll remain on the road at #1 North Central (IL). That game will begin at Noon from Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Ill.
