WAUKESHA, Wis. - It took 86 minutes and change for either team to crack the Schneider Stadium scoreboard on Wednesday night, but three goals ensued in the same amount of minutes, as Carroll men's soccer defeated Carthage College by a score of 2-1. The victory came as Carroll's first victory over their in-state rival since 2008.
Carroll (5-1-4, 1-0-1 CCIW) doubled Carthage's (5-4-1, 1-1-0 CCIW) shot attempts, taking 18 to Carthage's nine.
Both teams started the game on the defensive, with Carthage only getting five looks at the net and Carroll only getting six. The story remained the same to start the second half, as 85 minutes went by and donuts stayed on the scoreboard.
Finally, in the 85th minute, Marti Solanelles sent a left-footed shot to the back of the net from 35 yards out to break the tie. Carthage responded with an immediate goal 75 seconds later to knot the game back up at one apiece. With both teams seemingly content with running the clock out, Solanelles' eighth goal of the season came with 49 seconds to play, catapulting the Pioneers to a Homecoming Week victory.
Jason Brunger played all 90 minutes in the net for the Pioneers, allowing one goal and tallying three saves. For the Firebirds, Evan Kowalski withstood an onslaught from the Pioneers, playing all 90 minutes and facing 18 shots, 10 of which were on-goal. Kowalski came up with eight critical saves, but allowed the two nails in the coffin in the closing minutes.
Carroll, who has remained unblemished in their last seven contests, looks to push to eight-straight as they travel to Rock Island, Ill. To take on conference-foe Augustana at 3:30 p.m.
