Wheaton Sinks Carroll in the Final Minutes

WHEATON, IL - Carroll men's soccer had a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday night, falling to Wheaton 2-1 in a CCIW road match. Carroll (8-4-4, 4-2-1 CCIW) outshot Wheaton (10-5-1, 6-1-0 CCIW ) by a 14-12 margin, with Wheaton holding a slight 6-4 edge in shots on goal.  

The Pioneers came out of the gates hot, getting on the board in the second minute thanks to Josh Gonzaga's sixth goal of the season. The goal was Gonzaga's 24th time in his career finding back of the net, which moves him into a three-way tie for seventh in the Carroll career goal ranks. The Thunder responded to continue the early game action, scoring in the 14th minute to tie the game at one. Both defenses silenced the opponent for the next 70 minutes and change, until Wheaton's Pryse Anderson scored his second goal of the game to seal the victory for Wheaton. 

Gonzaga and Matthew Meke both led the team with three shots, while Gonzaga posted two shots on goal to lead the Pios. Jason Brunger got the start at goalie for Carroll, playing the full 90 minutes and allowing two goals and recording two saves.  

Carroll closes their regular season with the final game of a three-game road trip on Saturday, October 26, where they travel to Bloomington, IL to take on the Titans in a CCIW match with major postseason-seeding implications.
