OSHKOSH, Wis. - Carroll men's basketball traveled to UW-Oshkosh for a WIAC-CCIW matchup on Wednesday night, falling to the Titans by a score of 83-64.
Carroll (2-2, 0-0 CCIW) shot just over 32% from the field, including just over 29% from three-point land. UW-Oshkosh (3-1, 0-0 WIAC) finished the game with a 42.6% field goal percentage, including over 29% from beyond the arc in their wire-to-wire victory. The Titans scored 42 points in the paint to Carroll's 28. The game's leading scorer was Titan sophomore forward Michael Metcalf-Grossman, who scored 18 points in 32 minutes of play.
Three Pioneers scored in double figures on the night. Junior center Jacob Naber recorded a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double on the night, including eight boards on the offensive end. Steinike chipped in 11 points, and Evan Bland rounded out the Pioneers in double figures, tallying 11 points off the bench.
The came prepared for their home-opener, jumping to a 23-7 lead midway through the first half. Carroll clawed their way to bring the game within 10 thanks to three triples from Steinike, but never saw a single-digit deficit as UW-Oshkosh tamed any Carroll momentum. The two teams went into the locker room with Carroll down by a score of 45-31.
Carroll showed some fight in the second half, gaining momentum on multiple occasions and brought the game to 11 at the under-12 media timeout after Naber cashed in a layup. Oshkosh regained their 15 point lead two minutes later, nullifying any Carroll pushback. Carroll hung within striking distance, but could not get over the hump as one last time Carroll came within 12 jsut before the under-four media timeout, but the Titans earned their largest lead in garbage time after free throws became a factor. After the final buzzer, Carroll left the Kolf Sports Center with a 83-64 defeat.
Carroll returns to action with a home game against WashU St. Louis, who currently sits at #4 in the d3hoops.com top-25. Tip-off will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 23 inside Van Male Fieldhouse.
