Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#21 Carroll Rebounds With Win Over Olivet

HOLLAND, Mich. - For the second time in three games, Carroll's women's basketball team won a game in which they allowed fewer than 35 points, rebounding from their first and only loss of the season to #4 UW-Whitewater with an 85-34 victory against University of Olivet in what was the first day of the two-day Hope College Tournament. The Pioneers never trailed on the night, shooting 50 percent (37-74) from the field and 32 percent (7-22) from 3-point range.

Carroll (3-1) outscored Olivet (1-2) in the paint by a 46-8 margin, while the Pios' bench nearly outscored the entire Olivet team with a combined 31 points. Turnovers also played a key role, with Carroll turning 24 Olivet turnovers into 31 points.

After the two teams traded baskets for the first few minutes, Carroll took a stranglehold of the game, scoring the next 20 points in the contest. That run was keyed by a trio of 3-pointers, including two from Emilie Wizner. After Olivet scored the final basket of the quarter, Carroll went on another run in the second period, which saw them score the first 14 points. The Pios would go on to outscore Olivet 23-4 in the quarter, which helped them build a 47-10 halftime lead.

Carroll's largest lead of the night came on the final basket of the third quarter when a Katie Barger steal and fast-break layup gave the Pioneers a 72-21 advantage. That lead wouldn't dip below 43 points the rest of the night, as Carroll held Olivet to 22 percent (12-54) shooting, including 18 percent (4-22) from 3-point range. They were held to just 15 percent (4-27) shooting in the first half.

Eleven Pioneers scored at least three points in the game, led by 15 in 16 minutes from Olivia Rangel, who shot 7-for-11 from the field, to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Natalie Gricius added 12 points in 14 minutes, while Natalie Palzkill scored 11 in 14 minutes on 6-of-11 shooting. Wizner and Barger each scored 10 points, while combining to make 9-of-15 shots from the field. Chloe Halverson also made a key contribution, recording team-highs of five assists and four steals, while adding six points and four rebounds.

Olivet was led by Lily Connelly's eight points, three rebounds, and three steals. Madalynn Terry and Alayna Brown each added six points, with each converting a pair of 3-pointers.

The Pioneers will try for their second win in as many days on Saturday when they'll battle #12 Hope College. That game will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET at DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich.
