WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll men's basketball saw their losing skid extend to three games on Tuesday night, falling to MSOE by a score of 88-80.
MSOE (4-2, 0-0 NACC) shot the roof off Van Male Fieldhouse, shooting at a 71.4% clip from the field and 60% from three. The Raiders shot nearly 77% from the floor en route to a 49-point performance in the first half. Carroll (2-4, 0-0 CCIW) took 27 more shots than MSOE, but shot just above 39% from the field and over 27% from distance. The Raiders scored 44 points in the paint to Carroll's 32. The game's leading scorer was Raider junior guard Mason Dopirak, who scored an efficient 25 points in 34 minutes of play. Carroll dominated the offensive glass, corralling 13 offensive rebounds to MSOE's one.
Carroll had a balanced scoring attack, with four players scoring in double figures and three more just under ten points. Senior guard Erik Victorson led the Pioneers with 15 points including four three-pointers. Junior center Jacob Naber scored in double-figures for the fifth time this season, as he scored 12 points inside. Dom Burns and Evan Bland chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, to bring some juice off the bench.
Carroll was aggressive from the jump, getting to a quick 9-2 lead and forcing a Raider timeout less than four minutes into the game. MSOE responded with a 17-6 run of their own spanning the next five minutes to gain a lead that they would not give up for the entirety of the game. Senior Justin Steinike hit a three to pull within one point midway through the first. From there, MSOE went white hot as they scored 30 points to Carroll's 21, sending the two teams into the locker room with a 49-39 MSOE lead.
The Pioneers came out of the half with the first words, scoring seven quick points 75 seconds into the period to bring the game to one possession. Six minutes later, Carroll was staring their largest deficit in the face as an 18-2 Raider run gave MSOE a 67-48 advantage with 13 minutes to play. The Pioneers, unafraid of the scoring gap, began to chip away into the lead. Carroll spent the next nine minutes outscoring MSOE 25-10 to pull within four points with just under four minutes in the game. Carroll got many good looks late but could not bring the game closer, as MSOE knocked free throws down late to close the game with an 88-80 Pioneer defeat.
Carroll kicks off conference play after Thanksgiving break, returning to Van Male Fieldhouse for a matchup against North Park University. Carroll looks to snap their three-game losing skid and extend their win streak to three games against the Vikings. Tip-off against the Vikings will be at 7 p.m.
