RIPON, Wis. - Caroll's women's basketball team dropped their second consecutive game Saturday afternoon, falling to Ripon College by a score of 71-62. The two teams played evenly for the first three quarters, with the difference in the game coming in the final quarter, which saw the Red Hawks outscore 13th-ranked Carroll by a 25-14 margin. Ripon shot 54 percent (27-50) from the field, including 53 percent (9-17) from 3-point range, while Carroll converted 40 percent (24-60) of their shots and 21 percent (3-14) of their 3-pointers.
Ripon (4-2) wasted no time, scoring the first seven points of the contest in the first two minutes of the opening quarter. Carroll (4-3) then got on the board with a three-point play by
Kacy Kratz, which was followed by a
Natalie Gricius 3-pointer and a free throw by Kratz to tie the score at seven. Trailing by two in the final seconds of the quarter,
Anna Nielsen scored on a fastbreak layup for the Pioneers, tying the game at 14 entering the second period. The Pioneers would build a six-point advantage mid-way through the quarter, capped by a
Julia Lokker layup, but Ripon's Anna Fahrney connected on a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to cut Carroll's lead to two at intermission.
Carroll would take their largest lead of seven three minutes into the third quarter on an
Olivia Rangel layup, but Ripon would battle back, tying the score at 41 on a layup by Karsyn Nelson. After taking a two-point lead into the fourth and adding a free throw in the opening minute, Ripon tied the game at 49 on a Natalie Rauwolf 3-pointer. The two teams then traded baskets before Ripon took control of the game down the stretch, ending the game on a 19-9 run.
Rangel led Carroll with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, as she now has 1,249 career points, which ranks fifth in program history. Gricius and
Emilie Wizner each finished with 11 points, while combining for three 3-pointers and nine rebounds. Carroll forced 21 Ripon turnovers, while making just 13 of their own.
Ripon was led by Laney Havlovitz's 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Nelson added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Ella Ten Pas and Natalie Rauwolf each scored 12 points. The Red Hawks held a 38-28 rebounding advantage.
The Pios will try to rebound on Wednesday when they'll travel to Carthage College for their conference opener. That game will begin at 7 p.m. inside Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
