LISLE, Ill. - Carroll's women's basketball team showed no sign of rust after the holidays Monday afternoon, defeating Benedictine (IL) by a score of 80-56 in a game the Pioneers never trailed. Carroll finished the game with 46 points in the paint, while turning 25 Benedictine turnovers into 27 points.
Emilie Wizner scored the first five points of the game to give the Pios (7-5) the early lead. Benedictine (4-5) would score the next five points to tie the score at five, but that would be the only tie of the night. Carroll answered with a
Kacy Kratz bucket to give them the lead for good just two minutes into the contest. Leading by three mid-way through the opening quarter, the Pioneers ended the period with 12 unanswered points to take a 15-point lead into the second frame. In that quarter, Carroll outscored BenU by a 25-14 margin, taking their largest lead of the half on a layup by
Lauren Capstran in the final minute.
Carroll shot at least 50 percent from the field in three of the game's four quarters, finishing the day with a shooting percentage of .449 (31-69). The Pios also converted 47 percent (7-15) of their 3-pointers, while making 73 percent (11-15) of their free throws. Benedictine shot 41 percent (21-51) from the field, but were limited to jsut 17 percent (3-18) from behind the 3-point line.
Olivia Rangel led Carroll with 21 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while adding four rebounds, three steals, and a game-high five steals. Wizner added 19 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers, while
Chloe Halverson added eight points off the bench.
Benedictine was led by Allison Jarvis' 18 points off the bench. Megan Duzansky and Makenzie Carroll added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pioneers will jump back into conference play on Saturday when they'll travel to Millikin University. That game will begin at 2 p.m. from Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill.
