EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Carroll University softball team split its final two games of the season-opening Fontbonne Tournament on Saturday, winning the opener versus former Midwest Conference rival Grinnell College 10-8 and losing the finale to Belhaven University 4-2.
Carroll is currently 2-2 overall.
vs. Grinnell
Abby Curtis went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and drove in a run a to power a 10-hit offensive attack in the opener for Carroll.
Reagan Goluch and
Antoinette Napoli each followed with two hits and three RBIÂ for Carroll, who scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, following with three runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Sydney Raddeman added two hits and drove in two runs.
Carroll scored four runs in the momentum-building first, powered on a two-run double by Raddeman and two-run single by Goluch.
Grinnell trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the third.
Carroll followed with three runs in the third to extended its lead to 7-2. Goluch and Napoli each delivered run-scoring singles to ignite the critical spree.Â
Grinnell scored a single run in the top of the fourth, but Carroll added three runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 10-3, scoring what proved to be the decisive run on a two-run single by Napoli.
Grinnell, which finished with 11 hits but committed five errors, scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth but couldn't get any closer.
Carroll utilized four pitchers in the contest including starter
Hannah Martin,
Alyssa Cebreros,
Zoe Hilton and
Andrea Kuhne.
Kuhne, a junior right-hander, earned a victory by yielding no runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks through the final 1.1Â innings.
In the top of the seventh with runners on first and third and no outs, Kuhne responded to the pressure-packed challenge by answering with back-to-back strikeouts and forcing a game-ending groundout.
vs. Belhaven
Sophia Schmidt went 2-for-3 and drove in Carroll's only runs of the contest on a two-run single to center field in the top of the third.
The Pioneers finished with five hits in the battle.
Belhaven scored what proved to be the winning runs on a three-run double to center field in the bottom of the fifth.
Carroll is next scheduled to compete in the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida as part of its 2024 Spring Break trip March 8-15.
