BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team was swept in their CCIW-opening series, dropping games two and three to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in two close battles. The Pioneers lost game one 3-0 and dropped game two 7-6 in extra innings. The defeats mark the fourth and fifth consecutive losses the Pios have suffered to the Titans.
GAME 1
Carroll collected five hits in game one, coming from five different players. Joey Appino, Leo Matuga, Lane Scott, Anthony Tado, and Nick Angus all tallied singles in the game to round out the Pio attack at the plate.
The Pioneers' defense and pitching rotation was stout, forcing the Titans to leave eight runners on base in the contest. Erik Jaschinski started the game, going seven innings, and gave up three earned runs on 10 hits. Jaschinski also had three strikeouts and one walk. Roman Maguire came in in relief, tallying two strikeouts and only one hit in the last two innings.
The game started as a defensive slugfest, as there was only five hits and five runners left on base through the first three-and-a –half innings. Illinois Wesleyan broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run on three hits. Carroll remained in striking distance, holding the Titans scoreless for the next two innings. The Pioneers could not push a run across, leaving runners on base in three of the closing innings, as the Titans scored two more in the seventh inning to secure a safe lead that would keep the Pios at bay, securing a 3-0 victory.
GAME 2
Carroll was able to get the bats going in game two, as the Pioneers tallied 11 hits, four of which were doubles. Joey Appino led the way in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Scott, Eddie Synek, and Gabe Lee were additional Pios with multiple hits.
Illinois Wesleyan cracked the scoreboard right away in the first inning, going up 2-0. Carroll battled back in the third inning, scoring two runs from as Appino single and a groundout from Anthony Tado. Carroll took it's first lead of the series in the seventh inning when Appino scored from an error off a sacrifice bunt from Tado, putting the Pios up 5-4. The Titans immediately tied the game back up in the bottom of the seventh inning, ceasing any Pioneer momentum as they had the entire series. In the top of the ninth, Lane Scott drove in Mason Hege on a RBI single, giving Carroll the lead back at a score of 6-5. Once again, the Titans responded, scoring one in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings and then sealing the game in the bottom of the tenth on a single up the middle, sending Carroll home in heartbreak.
Carroll utilized four pitchers in the loss, including starter Braden Lewis, Noah Meyer, Andy Buskohl, and Connor Nolen. The pitching staff gave up five earned runs on 12 hits. The Pioneers also collected six strikeouts while only walking three batters. Nolen suffered the loss, going 2.1 innings and giving up three hits while striking out four batters.
Carroll returns to action on Wednesday April 3, where they host Carthage for their CCIW home opener. First pitch from Frame Park will be at 3 p.m.
